How to print a protractor

  1. Pick the background, label, and outline colors, then press Apply colors.
  2. Use the download buttons to download the template as either a PDF, PNG or JPG. The PDF is ready to print and can be either A4 or US Letter size. Or the PNG/JPG is perfect if you want to first restyle the template in a tool like Canva or an image editor.
  3. Set the size you want using your printer’s scale option or your editor. Printing at 100% keeps the size shown; scaling up or down lets you pick a specific size.
  4. Print the page. Card stock or thicker paper gives a cleaner, longer-lasting edge than standard copy paper.
  5. Cut out the protractor from the page and the center of the template.
  6. Place the center point on the angle you want and use the scale to measure the angle.

Reading the inner and outer scales

This template has two rings of numbers. The one you use depends on which way your angle opens. If the angle opens from the left, follow the outer scale; if it opens from the right, follow the inner scale. In both cases, keep the vertex on the centre point and one arm exactly on zero.

A4 or US Letter, one or two per page

Use US Letter in the United States and Canada and A4 almost everywhere else. Using the correct PDF size avoids your printer rescaling the page on its own.

The PDF settings let you place one protractor per sheet or two. Using two per pages lets you use less paper if you need to print a lot of protractors.

Ways to use it

  • Teachers handing out a class set without buying thirty plastic protractors, or covering for ones that went missing.
  • Students who need a protractor for homework tonight and do not have one nearby.
  • Geometry, technical drawing, sewing and quilting, model making, and general DIY layout work.
  • Print on card stock and laminate it for a reusable protractor that survives a school bag.

Why we made this tool

We wanted a protractor that anyone could print for free on the paper they already have. Most templates we found were fixed images that could not be used when printed. This one lets download whichever format you prefer and works with normal printer paper.

Frequently asked questions

Is the printable protractor free?

Yes. Every tool on Lapis Tools is free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark, and no limit on how many times you can download it.

Which file format should I download?

Choose the PDF (A4 or US Letter) if you just want a ready to print file. Choose PNG or JPG if you want to resize the protractor or drop it into another document, worksheet, or design tool first. PNG keeps a transparent background while JPG has a white background.

How do I change the colors?

Use the Background, Labels, and Outline color pickers under the preview, then press “Apply colors”. After, the preview and downloads will update to match the selected colors.

Is a printed protractor accurate?

The angle markings are geometrically exact and scale with the protractor. Thus, the printed protractor is accurate.
